Texas Private Investigator Licensing
Private investigation in Texas is regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Regulatory Services Division, Private Security Bureau under the Private Security Act (Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 1702). Every individual investigator and every PI agency operating in the state must hold a current license issued through this program — verifiable through the state's TOPS (Texas Online Permit System) lookup.
To qualify, an investigator must complete thousands of hours of supervised investigative experience (or an equivalent combination of a criminal-justice degree and experience), pass a DPS-administered exam, and complete required training on the legal boundaries of investigative work under both state and federal law. Licensed agencies must also carry professional liability insurance and their investigators complete continuing education to keep their license current.
